The Fleur-de-lis, translated from French as the lily flower, has become familiar to us over hundreds of years. It is a symbol of the Trinity and is associated with royalty and religion.

Most of us have heard what is called the “trinitarian formula.” This phrase has a biblical origin (Matthew 28:19). In this verse Jesus commands his disciples to go forth teaching “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This union of father/son/spirit is symbolized by the fleur-de-lis.

In an expanded interpretation of the scriptural phrase, Father signifies the Masculine Aspect of God; Son signifies all the sons and daughters of God, human beings made in the image of God and children of the Divine Creative Source; and the Holy Spirit signifies the Feminine Aspect of God. These represent the qualities of the Power of the Divine Father; the Wisdom of the Divine Son (Children); and, the Love of the Divine Mother.

As my teacher Patricia Cota-Robles has said: “no child is born without a mother.” Our patriarchal heritage has proclaimed that God is a Father who brought forth life on Earth without a Mother. God has the qualities of both power and love—male and female. The fleur-de-lis represents the balance of the Father, Child, and Mother, the Divine family that results from the Union of these qualities within each of us. This Union is not dependent upon gender, religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, culture, or any other physical condition. Each of us has these energies within us.

Also known as the three-fold flame, this exquisite symbol has for centuries spoken to us on deeply subconscious levels. In color, it merges the blue of the masculine, the pink of the feminine, and gives birth to the golden yellow of the Christ Child. When pink and blue combine, they produce violet, the color of transmutation. Wear the color that helps you express a Divine Quality: Blue when you want to exhibit Power, Pink when you want to project Love, and Yellow when you want to express Wisdom. Call upon the quality of Violet when you think of overcoming negativity.

The fleur-de-lis! I love this symbol—and besides, my name is Susan which means LILY.
