CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) is an international certification organization for Doulas, Childbirth Educators, and Lactation Educators. Since our foundation in 1998, we have certified thousands of perinatal professionals. As one of the first and most comprehensive perinatal organizations in the world, CAPPA is respected for its longevity and its commitment to excellence in both education and unsurpassed student and member support.
I am attending this conference where I am presenting today (September 30, 2018) a talk about the impact of pre- and perinatal experiences.
Birth Imprints: The Psychology of Birth
This presentation describes the field of prenatal and perinatal (PPN) psychology and its relationship to other institutions that impact how society treats childbirth, women, and babies. It includes relevant research supporting the contention that babies are aware and learning while in utero. Theories and examples point to a brighter future for women, babies, caregivers, and families as we focus on changing the way we think about giving birth and modify the language we use in discussing this vital topic. Our thoughts and feelings are shaped by the way we were treated—even before we were born. The impressions we formed about who we are, indeed how we think, feel and behave last a lifetime. We can ask: are those thoughts, emotions, and behaviors serving us today, or could they be changed for the better? Could the changes I make serve my clients better?
